Empty Voids

It is crazy to think that the whole expanse of creation is smaller than the void between a soul and it’s Creator if that soul has chosen to be distant. It is then understandable that the cross is folly to those who are perishing because the one who is perishing is an infinite distance from the Creator. How then do we fight to help those who are filling the infinite void with finite things. It is so easy to see when someone recognizes their emptiness, it is just hard to discern how to show them the true filler when they only want to do things on their own.

Modal Thinking and Discipleship: Modality as a Tool

Our greatest example for discipleship is Jesus: being God, He lived perfectly and as his people followed him, they received life experience. Since we are not God, I think that our tool for disciple ship is just that: LIFE EXPERIENCE. We grow in wisdom through situations we go through, through various trials and temptations…even through good events. We learn from the good and the bad and the “what ifs.” The “what ifs” are the ever protruding thoughts of “what if I had done it this way,” or “what if this had happened?” This is how I come to modality as our tool, which God has given us, to interpret experience and to use and share it with others.

We have the disposition(s) to think of possibility: the “what ifs.” Even though we can never know what may have happened as Aslan says in the Chronicles of Narnia, I think that God uses our ability to think through such things to direct and change our perspective(s) in such a way that we may act differently in the future. This, I believe, is the reason life experience is so important for disciple ship…we pass on what God has taught us.

So, thinking through possibilities then is a tool God uses to sanctify and develop his people with. However, there is a fine line, because if we rely to heavily on the “what ifs” of life, I think we can be easily drawn into worry and therefore, Sin!
